Who are you? Thanuja Gunatillake
Current qualification/level: GM Membership at Master Plumbers
What were you doing before plumbing? I started my career as a Civil Engineer following my love of problem solving and a pathway that I figured would open many doors for me. And it did. The skills I built along the way have taken me many places across the world of design, research, advocacy and social impact. Throughout my career, I have always followed my passion for figuring out how things work, how people tick and how to make a positive difference. I am very grateful for the tools a STEM background has armed me with- and for growing up in an environment where it was always an option. I know we’re not there yet, and the Women in Plumbing program highlights how much more work there is to be done in breaking down stereotypes, but I am thrilled to be playing a part in doing so.
Favourite part about working in plumbing? I love being part of a team that genuinely helps people every day. Master Plumbers supports the success of our members and the industry in so many ways - from the day-to-day needs of running a business to advocacy on their behalf at the highest levels. Never has the importance of this role been more apparent than over the past few years of COVID. I never cease to be inspired by the passion of this industry and everyone I work with.
Name one thing you want women coming into the industry to know: You don’t have to be anything but yourself to be a woman in the plumbing industry.
Fun fact about yourself: I was born in Sri Lanka, grew up in New York and plan to grow old in Melbourne.
